Kolkata’s Habra station witnessed a lockdown of train services for six hours by a group of localites demanding a Pitrubhumi local – a men-only train. When they were met with Police lathicharge, the situation became worse and the police were faced with brick-batting and stone pelting.
Times of India, in a news article, writes – “On Monday, male passengers demanding a ‘Pitribhumi local’ created a ruckus at Habra giving thousands of office-goers, students and traders a harrowing time on the suburban line. The agitation started a little before 8am after the down Bongaon-Sealdah ‘Matribhumi local’ reached Habra station.”
The news article also explains the brutality of the institution in dealing with people with genuine problems and how that ended in a riot.
This is just a grave manifestation of the fact that the common men are tired of reservations in almost every public place in the name of women empowerment.
